Day trip to Stonehenge and Old Sarum

To traverse the mysteries of ancient Britain is our goal today – We set off a small train ride from Portsmouth to Salisbury, the latter being the pickup point of our tour to Stonehenge and Old Sarum. It’s a fairly convenient arrangement, We pay and hop on the bus that will take us from Salisbury train station to Stonehenge, the Old Sarum and finally drop us off at the Salisbury train station. Also, the admission to Stonehenge is included so we get to skip the long queue (Phew!)

It’s a while before we catch our bus to Stonehenge, so we are lost in the streets of Salisbury

A short bus ride later, we approach the prehistoric Stonehenge intrigued by the legends and myths encompassing this World Heritage site that dates back to 3000 B.C. We gaze in awe at the ring of standing stones, painting the landscape with their mighty and powerful presence, a presence that still evinces no clear explanation to this day. Genuinely a sight to behold!

What is old Sarum? About 2 miles north of modern Salisbury located atop a hill, Old Sarum is the site of iron age settlers. Eventually, Romans, Saxons and Normans took over the settlement in turns. Described as “barren, dry, and solitary, exposed to the rage of the wind” the settlement was in due course abandoned and the foundation of a future cathedral was laid, which came to be known as New Sarum (Salisbury) – The spectacular views of which can be savoured from the Old Sarum Castle.
