Just a glance at the map of Amsterdam will get you intrigued! It looks nothing short of a work of art; the way canals are webbed into the land. Add a layer of picturesque bridges, and that makes it a treat for the eyes! Add to that Amsterdam’s bold and pragmatic culture and you won’t want to leave this place!

The city is encircled by 135 km long ring of fortifications, collectively known as the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Unfortunately, this line was rendered obsolete as soon as the construction finished in 1920, with the invention of aeroplane.

The concentric belts of canals around the city have a total length of more than a hundred kilometres. Dug in the 17th Century, these are probably the most valuable inheritance from the Dutch Golden Age.

We created a list of activities we did in Amsterdam, deliberately skipping museums and historic sites this time (saving that experience for another visit). This allowed us plenty of time to wander aimlessly and observe the local lifestyle. We're thrilled we made this choice and are eager to share it with everyone!

1. Oosterpark

Staying at the Generator Hostel in Amsterdam, located directly in front of this park, gave us the chance to enjoy leisurely walks around the park whenever we wanted! The park is quite beautiful, offering spots to sit by the water and observe the ducks, herons, and moorhens at play.

2. Magere Brug (Skinny bridge)

With an unusual architecture, it’s a fun bridge over the Amstel River, though not as narrow as the name suggests. It offers stunning views of the river, charming canal houses, and boats gliding by.

3. Sexmuseum

The moment I stepped into the museum, I couldn't stop giggling and stayed that way until I left! The museum is filled with exhibits and offers plenty of information on the evolution of the science and art of eroticism. If you're visiting Amsterdam with friends, this might just be the funniest spot on your trip!

4. De Wallen

You haven't truly experienced Amsterdam if you haven't visited this location. De Wallen is to Amsterdam what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. Commonly referred to as the Red Light District, it's a distinctive area of the world. However, merely gawking at the more unsavory elements won't enhance your visit. We recommend approaching it with an open mind and showing respect to the Red Light workers. By evening, the streets glow with neon red lights, and the canal running through the main street offers an exhilarating view!

5. Zaanse Schans

Rent a bike from Amsterdam and paddle your way through the incredible countryside or take a short train ride till Zaandam station and rent a bike there for a 5 min ride to Zaanse, either way is great, but make it a point to visit this place.

Blustery weather, authentic windmills, the scent of cheese and chocolates wafting through the air, and farm animals lounging about – the historic essence of the Netherlands is right before your eyes! Truly a sight to admire.

6. Openbare Bibliotheek (Central Library)

We went there not to read but as tourists. The entry is free and it’s a very modern, tastefully designed and furnished library that has a rooftop cafe with reasonable prices. The outdoor seating offers amazing views of the cityscape, all that for free! We found it lovely and quite impressive.

7. Squares and markets

Amsterdam is teeming with lively squares and cobblestone alleys, with Dam Square being a favored location to see street performers captivating the crowds, who continuously cheer them on. The narrow lanes are replete with shops selling food, souvenirs, cheese, macaroons, sex toys and all things risqué!
